Sarah Corbett-Winder dreams up three bedroom schemes
A dream bedroom is the ultimate life goal: perfectly layered textiles, restful colours and uplifting details, making the most personal space in the home a true sanctuary. It is, after all, where we begin and end each day. However, for what is often a compact room, the bedroom has a lot of heavy lifting to do: a stylish bed, storage and bedside tables are a minimum requirement, not to mention a bonus dressing table. Ultimately, the best bedroom furniture will be chic and practical.
I have created 3 bedroom furniture schemes, each themed by colour: red, blue and olive. Picking one colour for a room works best in my opinion. You can always add a splash of an unexpected colour in your decorations. As always with me, you will find there are lots of charming stripes and checks. They are a great addition to any bedroom and work extremely well in any scheme. This may speak to my maximalist tendencies, but I see them as a neutral.
One piece of advice I can offer is to buy in pairs where you can. Bedside tables, lamps and mirrors can all help to frame a room. Finally, for those finishing touches, painting architraves and window frames in contrasting or tonal colours can be fantastic addition. And when you’re done? The red room
I find red such a joyful colour, so I think it's best to really embrace it. More is more if you ask me! To smarten up a more affordable wardrobe, you can always add expensive hardware, like these Shoppa by Beata Heuman ‘Rope Handles’. It's a trick I use often and one I find endlessly useful. I'd use Little Greene's 'Theatre Red' wherever possible, and would have a smart headboard made by The Headboard Workshop. Perhaps in a Buchanan Studio stripe or Penny Morrison floral.
The blue room
I think this is the most quintessentially ‘pretty’ scheme, and it has a lovely relaxed feel to it. I'd just as soon have it as my own bedroom, but it would also be completely dreamy to have as a guest room; you really get lost in the wallpaper. For the furniture, rattan is a favourite of mine and the bobbin bench is a must have for our household! The colour is so chic. Any accents or woodwork would be painted in Little Greene's ‘Livid’.
The olive room
This is probably the most calming and mature feeling scheme of the trio. We see rattan and bobbin pop up again, which isn't too surprising since they are forever trends that I will always cherish and come back to. The earthy lamps would be fabulous as a pair sitting atop bedside tables. For a more permanent addition, why not add some panelling to the walls? It's a cheap and easy way to add grandeur.
