Paris is many things: it is the capital of culture and a hub of history; it is the city of light, of romance, of un-ending possibility. It is also a haven of hotels, not all created equally. Whether you're a first-timer or a connoisseur of the city, we've rounded up the best in Paris, from luxury suites to adorable and affordable lodgings beneath 19th-century rafters.
Which is the best area to stay in Paris?
There are no wrong areas to stay in Paris. The urban layout of Paris is similar to that of a snail, with each neighbourhood (or arrondissement) wrapping around the next counterclockwise. The 1er arrondissement, home to the Louvre, the rue Saint-Honoré and Palais Royal sits at the centre of the city; the arrondissements in the teens (i.e. 10e to 20e) unfurl to the outer edges of the city (called la Périphique, or, colloquially, ‘la Periph’ in French). Those who wish to be at the centre of the action would do well to stay in single-digit arrondissements, whereas those up for something different may choose to stay in the further-out neighbourhoods. That being said, Paris is very walkable and has easy-to-navigate public transportation options (in fact, you can get from the northern tip of Paris to its southernmost point in just one afternoon) so if you find yourself staying away from the centre, fear not. Each arrondissement in Paris is a teeny village unto itself, full of individual charms and quirks.
Those who'd like to remain in the centre of the action, first-timers to Paris and families each may prefer to stay in the 1er or 2e arrondissement, as both neighbourhoods are well-connected and are home to some of Paris' best museums, shopping and food. Those seeking out luxury, too, may want to also stay in the 1er, the neighbourhood with the most five-star accommodations in the city; however, there are plenty of equally lavish hotels throughout the city, including the rather chi-chi 7e arrondissement, on the Left Bank.
Those seeking a romantic, quintessential ‘Parisian’ experience à la the film Midnight in Paris will want to stay in the magical Saint-Germain-des-Près neighbourhood, the 6e arrondissement, full of lovely art galleries, antique shops and quaint bakeries. The neighbourhood is a wonderland for lovers of philosophy and art history, as well as Walter Mitty types, too.
Hipsters and those looking to party Paris-style will immediately feel at home in the cooler 9e or 4e arrondissements, both close to the city's trendiest bars, restaurants, markets and shops. The 4e, or the Marais, is Paris' former Jewish quarter and is now home to a wonderful array of great restaurants, boutiques and bars. The 9e, or Pigalle, is Paris' former red light district; today, it is the watering hole for the city's most ‘bobo’ (French for hipster) residents.
How many days should I spend in Paris?
Any amount of time in Paris is wonderful. However, the duration of your stay will wholly depend on what you'd like to do in the city. If you're a first-timer, we'd advise setting aside a few days, ideally a week! This will give you plenty of time to get to know the city by strolling its grandest boulevards, sipping wine in its loveliest cafés and visit its most historic monuments.
However, if you're unable to give up a week, we'd recommend staying the duration of a long weekend, about four days. This will give you plenty of time to get to know your new neighbourhood, enjoy a few mornings – croissant in hand – and hit up the essential Paris pitstops from museums to markets to shops.

As a visitor heading to Saint-Germain, you probably have a rather sophisticated itinerary planned: some browsing in the many beautiful interiors shops and galleries that populate the charming streets, perhaps a walk over the river to the Louvre, and some opulent dinners in the neighbourhood's wide variety of restaurants. For the stylish couples and solo travellers who might plan this kind of trip, Villa-des-Prés is everything you could want. The interiors are cool and scattered with art, so it feels like interiors reflect what is going on outside. It is a relatively small hotel, and while it has a bar and a breakfast area, there is no restaurant, so it assumes you'll be going out for dinner. On the other hand, there is a small and charming spa area, with a pool and sauna, and massages and other treatments on offer – perfect for winding down after a long day on the hoof. We can't think of many nicer places to spend a city break in the area.
The interior architecture and decoration of the rooms were done by Bruno Borrione, a designer long associated with Philippe Starck, who has created some very cool, retro public spaces, as well as airy yet colourful bedrooms that reference classic Parisian architecture while remaining very much of the moment. Shades of red and brown are a theme that run throughout, from the glossy paintwork of the bathrooms to the luxurious furniture of the bar downstairs. The art is a highlight, all specially commissioned from French artists for the hotel by Amélie du Chalard of nearby Amélie Maison d'Art (the gallery is well worth a visit in its own right). The hotel still feels a lot like what it used to be – an apartment building – and as you take up residence you feel you could be staying in a stylish Parisian's home. Beata has brought her discerning eye for timeless design to the interiors, using lots of natural materials and solid wood, which will age gracefully and develop a beautiful patina over time Its USP? It is that very rare gem of a reasonably priced hotel with excellent design and no corners cut, as well as being centrally located. In short, you can't fault it. What's more, the shower amenities are all Diptyque – a chic touch.

The arrival of Château Voltaire last year saw the fruition of a personal project by Zadig & Voltaire founder Thierry Gillier. He enlisted the help of creative director Franck Durand to create a pied à terre-like hotel that embodies the understated elegance and quiet luxury Paris is known for, while steering away from the glitzier conventions common to upscale hotels. The building is comprised of 16th-, 17th- and 18th-century parts and was previously the headquarters of Zadig & Voltaire. As such, no two rooms are the same and each is distinct based on where it is in the building, but all decked out in the same earthy, quietly luxurious scheme. Downstairs, you'll find a small spa, which is bookable for private use, as well as a restaurant and bar that are destinations in their own rights.

Paris-based Orso Hôtels opened seven hotels between 2019 and 2022, providing intimate, locally rooted stays in the lesser-known neighbourhoods. Those seeking adventure and a more authentic (but still chic) experience of Paris' rather trendy but still boho neighbourhood, Montmartre must give it a visit. Those also seeking a more affordable option in a discernibly expensive city will love the hotel's modest price point. Recently revitalised by interior design specialists Festen, the hotel is modern whilst calling back to the building's Art Deco history. Minutes away from both the Basilique Sacré-Cœur and Moulin Rouge, too, the hotel is perfect for getting to know the capital's northern landmarks. With one of Paris' best rooftop bars, too, the Hotel Rochechouart is the perfect landing place for the hipster crowd who enjoy a well-made drink or two.
