Ever since this Carlos Garcia project graced the pages of House & Garden back in January 2023, readers and staffers alike have been enthralled by his use of colour. The Queen Anne house has been sensitively modernised, without compromising on character or history. By using traditional colours that feel at home in red-brick, gable-ended houses, but pairing them in contemporary ways, Carlos has created a charming family house.

Though some of the paints in this project were custom-mixed by Edward Bulmer, many of them are available to buy. Here, we breakdown some of the prettiest paints in this Queen Anne house.

In this cheerful kitchen, Carlos has kept the walls neutral, adding colour in unexpected places. The underside and legs of the table are painted in Papers and Paints' ‘Deep Grès de Flandres Blue’ and the door is Edward Bulmer’s ‘Naples Yellow’.

Seen from another angle, the kitchen island is painted in Plain English’s ‘Nicotine’, which draws the eye through to the yellow hallway. Behind, the cabinetry is painted in Plain English’s ‘Army Camp’.

In the bedroom, Carlos has painted the walls in Edward Bulmer’s ‘Celadon’ – a colour the owner initially hated. However, Carlos told her, ‘Wait until the curtains are up and, if you still don’t like it, I promise I will repaint the room at my expense.’ His gamble paid off and she now loves the room.

In the bathroom, the woodwork is painted in ‘Aquatic’ by Edward Bulmer. The paper is Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler’s ‘Seaweed’ wallpaper and the fabric is a custom colourway.
