Up until this point, I have been an enthusiastic advocate of feather pillows. I quite like the way they can be punched and moulded into shape for maximum cosying-down time. However, this constant re-shaping of feather pillows can get a bit out of hand, leading to too much tossing, turning and re-plumping - which can come across as more than a tad ‘fidgety’ to a bed-partner. For that reason I decided to at least try a cushion that ‘springs back into shape’.

Marks & Spencer's ‘Hotel Soft Cotton Medium Pillow’ seemed like a good option, in that it has a cotton casing, which is softer and more breathable than other options, and it has a recycled polyester inner (I didn’t want this purchase to use any ‘virgin’ polyester products). I like that it is made in the UK, and at £29.90 for a pack of two, it is affordable.

Marks & Spencer's ‘Hotel Soft Cotton Medium Pillow’: is it worth buying?

The pillow was exactly the right depth for me - not neck-craningly thick, and not sad and flat either! It felt comfortable and supportive, and I definitely think I have had a much more calm night’s sleep than if I had kept to my previous set up of full-feather pillows.

However, after a few nights of trialling, my perfect happy medium has turned out to be using one of these nice, shape-constant pillows from M&S to provide the baseline structure and support, combined with one feather pillow that I can mash and mangle to my heart’s content.

I think at this price point, this pillow is a great option for someone who wants to move away from, or combine with, feather. The only upgrade, for me, would be to opt for a fully natural-fibre alternative to this kind of pillow, such as wool. However, at around a quarter of the price of a wool equivalent, I think this product works really well.
