Growing up, I spent much of my time squishing into feather pillows and feeling very frustrated. Inevitably, at some point in the night, the feathers would shift in their casing and I would be left with just a couple of millimetres between my head and the mattress. Then, after a few months, or years, of use, the stitching would give way and the feathers would start to come loose. What I had always longed for was a pillow with that soft - for lack of a better word - pillowiness: a plump, inviting mound into which you want to nestle.

I became a convert to the memory foam pillow about a decade ago. At first, it felt a little brick-like and I wasn't convinced it would be conducive to a good night's sleep, but then it ended up being supremely comfortable and fixed any neck ache I had. I'm embarrassed to admit that in the ten years since this discovery, I had not replaced my memory foam pillow and it was starting to look a little sad.

In search of something that ticked the ‘pillowiness’ box but also offered all of the comfort of memory foam, I turned to the Nectar ‘Premium Pillow'. Having had a very positive experience with my Nectar ‘Premier Hybrid’ mattress, I had high hopes.

Nectar 'Premium Pillow': is it worth buying?

I admit, the pillow was not exactly what I was expecting. I was used to the absolute firmness of my previous memory foam pillow, and was surprised to receive a pillow which is filled with small bundles of shredded foam which can be moved about to your liking.

However, after a few sleeps, I realised that the Nectar 'Premium Pillow' offers the best of both worlds: the mouldable foam core provides structure (and keeps your spine nicely aligned throughout the night), but it's covered in a soft, cloud-like quilted outer casing. Not only is this practical, as the outer casing can be removed and easily cleaned, but it also makes the pillow ultra-breathable. The casing is made using Tencel - a cotton alternative which promises more air-flow, and also has a mesh border, allowing even more air to flow through and increasing its cooling effect.

Fact file

  • Material: Memory foam core with a quilted polyester and Tencel blend cover
  • Machine washable? Spot clean only (though the removable cover makes this very easy)
  • Country of manufacture: UK
  • Sizes available: 60x40x12cm
