If you know me, you know of my ability to fall asleep just about anywhere, no matter the location, the view, the circumstance. It's a special power, really. To the chagrin of my father, I slept an entire car ride from Bologna to Forte dei Marmi (peaceful, but missed many an Italianite meadow), I gently snored away on a New York City subway hurtling way, way past my stop (confusing in the moment and only harrowing in retrospect) and had sweet, sweet dreams on a violently rocking ferry from Sifnos to Mykonos, my poor fellow passengers dropping like flies around me as I slept soundly (good for me, nightmarish for them). Recently, for the first time in my life, I found myself unable to get to sleep. After many moves from New York to Paris to Belgium to several London sublets, finally, my special sleep-anywhere ability gave out: on the ancient mattress in our newly-rented flat, there I lay like an uncomfortable, cranky sardine. I tried flipping my pillow, counting sheep and listening to ‘Calming Jungle Sounds’ volumes 1, 2 and 3, but the hours just flopped by… I couldn't get to sleep.
So, when Simba came knocking at my proverbial door (read: email), offering me the chance to trade in my uncomfortable pauper's mattress for, well, the Queen of the comfortable kingdom, their Hybrid Luxe Mattress, I pounced on the opportunity.
Simba's Hybrid Luxe mattress: is it worth buying?
Whilst Simba has a whole range of comfortable mattresses (see our review of their Hybrid Pro mattress), the Hybrid Luxe mattress is the company's most advanced and luxurious (as well as priciest). A medium-firm mattress (i.e., supportive but soft), the mattress is comprised of ten distinct layers, three of which are proprietary and found only in this particular Simba mattress, made of small conical carbon steel springs to absorb movement. The others are made of hypoallergenic wool and infused with bamboo (fabulous for those with allergies) and are topped with a soft, breathable surface. The mattress' foam is chemical free, too, making it both human- and eco-friendly.

How much does a Simba mattress cost?
Whilst the Hybrid Luxe mattress is certainly costly (£2,399 for a King and £2,299 for a Double), investing in one's sleep is worthwhile. At the time of writing, there is a 40% discount on offer for the Hybrid Luxe mattress, significantly reducing the mattress price.
What was the delivery process?
Aside from the speedy turnaround time between ordering and receiving the mattress (it only took three days!), the delivery process was fairly unremarkable. I received regular email notifications regarding the projected delivery date and time of my mattress; on delivery day, I received the mattress within Simba's predicted timeframe. Wheeled into my flat by two sub-contracted helpers, the mattress was squeezed into a large, bright blue box fit with hand holes, which made it easy to manoeuvre. Should you order a Simba mattress while still holding onto your old one, you will need to organise a removal separate from delivery; unlike some other furniture or mattress companies, your mattress order does not include removal.
Simba Hybrid Luxe Mattress verdict: is it worth it?
Yes, the Simba Hybrid Luxe mattress is worth it.
The most luxurious in its line of hybrid mattresses, the Simba Hybrid Luxe is one of the most comfortable mattresses I've ever slept on. It is supportive, soft and breathable; as someone who runs hot, the latter has been a game-changer for my sleep.
And my sound sleep is not borne from placebo effect: my wearable sleep tracker has noted that I've been sleeping better and more deeply this week, with my REM cycle improving by over 30% and my ability to fall asleep falling from a ten minute latency period to four. Talk about sweet dreams.
